Autumn 2023
Instructors: Monica Ponce de Leon, Erin Besler, Mitch McEwen
Site: Clay St, Princeton
1. An ADU (...Yoga Studio)
As property prices in Princeton increase, ADU legislation allows homeowners to monetise their backyards, but ADU homeowners aren’t afforded the same spatial opportunity. By concealing a Yoga Studio within a standard gable-roof exterior, this ADU inhabitant can quietly generate profit from their home too.
‘…Quiet must not be conflated with silence. Quiet registers sonically, as a level of intensity that requires focused attention.’ Tina M. Campt

2. A Stage for One, a Home for Two
A duplex space that can invite performance, openness & spectatorship for a client who entertains, meanwhile providing a reflective residence for a second, more private client.

3. A Home for the Service Staff of Princeton University
Site: Minstral Carpark, Downtown Princeton
The service workers who cook, clean, build and landscape are as key to building the institution as the academic activity they facilitate. This community center is a place for staff to go during breaks: a cafe, common rooms, showers, workshops. With moveable walls, a series of small apartments can be coordinated for staff to stay on-campus overnight, such as during a snowstorm, giving them more flexibility.
